I wanted to start a new game this afternoon. I haven´t seen the option “nomads” before. Was it there also in the testing version? It seems a lot of fun; 18 Bannis with only 100 food in the store, nothing else; no tools, no clothes; nothing. :)
But I had something that looks like a bug. To support all these people (they have rye but I play on “harsh” so you can forget farming, I use everything I can; a few instant hunters, a few trout fisher and because there´s a stream not far from the starting position; a couple of gatherers for crayfish.
At my first attempt, I discovered some people on the other side of the stream on their way to starve to death. I thought that I might have put one of the crayfish spots in the wrong direction. But at the second attempt, the same happened; after some time the gatherers didn´t like to catch any more crayfish: Instead, they walked along the stream and crossed it at the end of the map. I thought that maybe they can´t reach the “entrance” of the first crayfish spot down by the lake, so I restarted the game again without this spot and this time I looked carefully what happened. My both gatherers started to catch crayfish, after a while; one had caught 60 and had 15% left on his spot, the other had caught 90 and had 10 % left, both got tired of fishing, started to idle on their way up along the stream. It looks that they are heading for some idling spot on the other side of the stream.
Have anyone an explanation for this? I have used cray fishing in several games but never had these problems before.
It seems this problem still happens, that workers at the crayfish spot find a way to the other side when idling between work steps. Maybe if the spot is somewhere at a corner of a stream. I will make some tests and try to fix it.
This stream is at a lake, I don´t think any of my other crayfish streames were. But I can´t understand how this could change anything. If you look at the picture, you can also see that they fish at spot nr 3 and 5 from the bottom, not at the end of the stream. The map seed is 845834870, valley, medium, if you want to look at it. I´ve now built a bridge and started to cray fishing again. So far I saw no one idling on the other side of the map.
By the way, it took until year 5 until everyone had a house and a tool (OK, I couldn´t stop myself from taking more nomads from the capel otherwise it might have been a little bit faster;) )
The problem is probably not connected to the lake, maybe not even to the location at all. I try to completely block the way to the other side.
The Nomad start was not in beta version. I added it as another solution against slow progress in early game with real time aging and because it’s fun to start with a lot of people. On harsh it must be pretty hard as you say, where the rye doesn’t really work.
I’m also not sure that it’s related to crayfish. I caught a bannie walking across a large river, because I had been sloppy with my resource pick-up area and included something on the other side of the river. The bannie had been a fisherman at a fishing spot, but when I turned the spot off she immediately headed into the river to go pick up a mushroom. I caught this happening when she was about halfway across, cancelled removal of the mushroom and she returned to her side of the river.
Crossing a large river I did not see yet. That’s really odd.
Today I was looking at the crayfish spot and it indeed still creates a path through small streams. I think I have fixed it now by making it one tile shorter. It can still be placed only on streams but no crossing people anymore. I tested it by forcing them to the other side with an only idling spot and at different locations.
I have seen such crossings, that´s a vanilla bug. It may happen if you by accident tries to clear something on the wrong side of the river; they may find their way there but not the way back. But I´ve never seen someone turn who was on his way to something like your “mushroom lady”, taganaya.
