Banished people need 100 food per year to survive. To stay healthy, they also need a balanced diet consisting grain, vegetables, fruits and protein. Food can be obtained by hunting and gathering, fishing as well as crop farming and livestock breeding. Processing and preservation will improve your food production. In the North you can produce or import the following food resources:

Hey Tom, or anyone who can confirm this for me,
So, I was going for the “ultimate challenge” A.K.A. Harsh, mountains, small, disasters, survivor and ironman mode.
Although I know the seafarer start is considered harder, it is still my first time trying out ironman mode and am somewhat proud to already be in year 10 with 0 deaths. Although I’m still only with my initial 4 adults plus their 2 childs in the goahti’s they’re living in.
So besides my bragging the real question that I have is that a merchant is selling butter, but I couldn’t find the entry in the wiki. So I’m assuming it is a protein (although butter is mostly fat, like animal fat, but that’s also considered a protein)
For a future suggestion if it’s possible on the technical issues of modding (I have no knowledge of this so my apologies if this sounds stupid) it might be an idea to add fat to the food equation of vegetables, fruits, grains and proteins to maybe even make them combinations of %/% fat/protein for different meats, dairy and nuts and near 100% fat for animal fat, butter and possibly other sources. Maybe fish can have a larger fat content so they can compete again with hunting/cray fishing which are already great sources of protein so fishing could be a meta again on hard settings compared to hunting reindeer or cray fishing which are currently the best resources for protein on harder settings for as far as I know.
I’m no modder but since I’ve followed the discussions around modding from day one, I’m pretty sure that it’s not possible to add a new food category, that people need in addition to the 4 they need today. There are many things in Banished that are hard-coded, not accessible for the modders. As far as I know, they could “label” butter any category they want or all or none of them but not give it a new category.
Concratiolations to survive the start on those options, after you’ve managed the difficult start, it will work fine as long as you are disciplined and don’t let the number of children be too high. It’s easier to grow with immigration than with a lot of children.
Thanks for the reply Nilla!
Always good to have suspicions confirmed :)
In year 17 now and I suppose you are right about the difficult start, because once I finally made my first iron tools it felt like my villagers could finally breathe for a moment. Still haven’t collected enough big boulders for the thingstead to grow with immigration yet, but I’ll get there eventually. Had 2 families of 2 adults / 1 child in 2 goahtis, but somehow when I built another one to move a family closer to work only the mother moved and made a new baby when my other 2 children weren’t grown up yet. I did put the family back together but then suddenly I had 4 people in the goahti and 4 adults with 3 children in total so I was scared for a moment I screwed things up and have too much kids and everybody will die. At least it was after already having the iron tools and adepting 90% of gameplay to just chase reindeer made them all survive somehow until the first 2 were adults and everything was fine once again :]
Looks like you just discovered the trick of getting more children than the houses allow by using the “separation trick”. Even if you didn´t really want it in this game, you can use it deliberately. If you have more houses than families couples may separate, they always remain a family and the woman will get so many children the house allows. If you hadn´t forced them back together, she would have given birth to another child in the goahti (3 people).
My experience is that less than 50% children compared to adults work fine with Ironman, more is a struggle and if you have as many children as adults, it´s really hard to get enough food.
Peach Schnapps?!?!? Gotta have it! Lol

I believe the “yield” for crawfish is “90/20 tile” (1 location = 20 tiles of stream?), protein.
– Looks like once per year > per location “crawfished”
– If so, highly lucrative / zero investment
– So… 2nd highest protein per tick (vs deer)?
