The penning or penny is the oldest coin known in the North. Vikings got them from England or from the European mainland and used it for trading or to horde silver. In Banished land it is used as small coin with a stable value of 1. Using pennies you can conclude every trade without overpaying. Good to always have a few in your trading posts.
